Apple MacBook Pro 14 or MacBook Air: Read this Guide to Decide

Apple’s new MacBook Pro 14 is awesome, to say the least. But is it suitable for all users and applications? Find out more after reading this:

MacBook Pro 14 Performance

The new M1 Pro in the MacBook Pro 14 has additional cores for both the CPU and the GPU.

The cores, on the other hand, are nearly identical to the famous M1 SoC, and you will not notice a significant performance change in common applications.

The graphics capability of the standard M1 is likewise more than enough for many users. The M1 Pro (with 8 or 10 CPU cores) is worth considering if you have a lot of demanding tasks and need more than 16 GB of RAM.

The extra performance is especially handy when editing videos.

The optional M1 Max provides even more GPU performance and is only appropriate for professional multimedia makers who benefit from the GPU power as well as 32 or even 64 GB of RAM. The fans are typically quite silent, albeit the Air has an edge in this regard due to the passive cooling method.

MacBook Pro 14 Display

The MacBook Pro 14’s new Mini-LED display provides great visual quality, especially when viewing HDR material.

However, this is one of the concerns, because Apple’s high brightness levels only apply to HDR material.

The standard range content, on the other hand, is restricted to 500 nits, which is equivalent to the smaller MacBook Pro 13 M1 and somewhat better than the MacBook Air.

The Pro 14 clearly benefits from an incredibly high contrast ratio, although the difference isn’t significant in everyday scenarios.

All panels cover the DCI-P3 gamut and are adequate for image/video editing, with the two IPS screens even outperforming the others in terms of PWM flickering and reaction times.

Final thoughts?

If you’re not sure if you need the extra performance of the new M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs, the answer is probably no, and you’ll be just fine with the basic Apple M1 SoC.

The MacBook Pro 13 M1 is still based on the outdated Intel architecture and only offers a performance advantage over the MacBook Air M1 under continuous workloads (due to active cooling), and we prefer the standard special keys over the Touch Bar in the Pro 13.

The new MacBook Pro 14 is unquestionably a powerful multimedia laptop, even a tiny workstation, primarily meant for programmers or content makers working with high-resolution files and, preferably, HDR material to take use of the new Mini-LED panel’s capabilities.

It is also one of the most energy-efficient devices, and the competition from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia currently lacks a solution.

If you are not in either of these two groups, the more compact MacBook Air M1 will likely satisfy you just as well, and you can even save a lot of money.

A comparably equipped Air with 512 GB SSD storage and 16 GB RAM costs AED 2000 less, and the 8 GB version should be plenty for most daily work.
